- Our students have won competitive scholarships from
actuarial organizations:
SEAC (2011,2013, 2015, 2016, 2017)
CASE (2012, 2014, 2015)
D. W. Simpson (2015)
- Our students have had many internship opportunities.
Kailee Gerzema, a graduate at Belmont University shares about her internship experience:
"I had the opportunity to intern with Colonial Life in Columbia, SC two summers in a row. Each summer I was given a different project to spearhead during the ten weeks I was there. I was able to create tools for other departments to make their jobs more efficient. During my time there I worked with software such as Excel, SAS, and Prophet and was able to learn what it's like to work in the corporate environment."
Savannah Halliday, a graduate of Belmont University shares about her internship experience:
"Last summer, I interned at a casualty actuarial consulting agency, Select Actuarial Services. I was able to participate in the loss reserve analysis and creation of loss forecast studies of a variety of companies that self-insure to some degree. During my time there, I was exposed to a range of actuarial methods, and was also challenged to develop my Excel and communication skills. I have since accepted an offer to return to my internship position summer 2016."
Mallory White, a graduate of Belmont University shares about her internship experience:
"I had the opportunity to intern with Mercer in the Executive Benefits Group in Louisville, KY. I worked a lot with valuing different retirement plans and seeing how companies rank against their peers. I was also part of a group project that looked at the various benefits of technology companies. From arcade games to child daycare, companies have all sorts of ways to keep employees at each level excited to come to work. Our presentation was given to leaders of Mercer with additional ideas of our own. This experience allowed me work with consulting actuaries and has led to a permanent position after graduation."
Annie Brunelle, a graduate of Belmont University partook in the following internship experiences:
In the summer of 2013, Annie interned at Michigan State University, Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). She studied the applications of Brownian motion using Random Walks on Spheres, worked with harmonic functions and steady state solutions of LaPlace's equation using MATLAB, and her final results were presented at the 2013 MathFest conference in Hartford, CT, the SUMMR conference in Mt. Pleasant, MI, and the Joint Mathematical Meeting conference in Baltimore, MD.
In the summer of 2014, Annie interned at Unum, where she led a project to create a more accurate model for predicting DAC amortization lapse rates.
She worked in Excel, SQL, Teradata, and Qlikview to perform data analysis, construct methodologies, and back test. Also the internship entailed presenting model success and overall impact at bi-weekly departmental staff meetings.
