About Us
Belmont Actuarial Students Society was officially recognized as a student organization in the spring of 2012, two years after the pioneer group of Belmont’s actuarial students had taken their first actuarial exam. Belmont Actuarial Students Society aims to provide actuarial students with a comprehensive understanding of the actuarial profession at Belmont University, Nashville Tennessee. Four aspiring actuarial students, Anne Brunelle (Annie), Emma Stone, Wesley Whitson (Whit), and Li Yang (Mary), came together in fall 2011 and sought to create an organization dedicated to encourage support, friendship, leadership and professional growth that would draw other aspiring actuaries together. Given the interdisciplinary nature of Actuarial Science, they found mentor-ship with Dr. Daniel Biles at the Mathematics Department and Dr. Joe Smolira at the Finance Department. Along the journey, they had also found camaraderie among other fellow aspiring actuaries, namely David Huffman (Reid), who had passed two actuarial exams at the time of organization’s recognition and served as the first ever Presiding Officer of Belmont Actuarial Students Society. The mission of Belmont Actuarial Students Society is to offer a nurturing community for students, scholars and faculties with an interest in Actuarial Science, and to foster a social, cultural and intellectual forum in which students can discuss relevant academic and business issues. Belmont Actuarial Students Society also assists students interested in careers as actuaries by providing informational presentations, lectures, interviewing opportunities, and exam study groups. In order to inspire a general interest in Actuarial Science and related fields, Belmont Actuarial Students Society encourages participation from students in all disciplines and backgrounds, not only those majoring in mathematical or business fields. BASS will also facilitate a variety of activities and events both on and off campus, with a particular eye toward practically assisting students to identify and cultivate potential career paths in the financial sector. BASS has no political, cultural, physical, economic, or ideological affiliations or biases, and welcome diverse points of view. |
